Hurwicz expected utility and subjective sources
نویسندگان
چکیده
In experiments, subjects are often not indifferent among all sources of uncertainty; between two prospects yielding the same distribution of monetary rewards, they may strictly prefer one over the other. We formulate a special case of α-maxmin expected utility theory in a Savage setting, show that every decision maker perceives multiple subjective sources, and that source-utilities are rank dependent expected utility. A power series identifies each source, measures source-uncertainty, and determines the agent’s sourcespecific risk attitude. Subjective sources connect Ellsberg-paradox behavior with source preference and with Allais-paradox behavior. † This research was supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation (Grant number: SES0820101). We are grateful to Adriano Basso and Jay Lu and three anonymous referees for many insightful comments and suggestions.

Familiarity Breeds Completeness
This is a study of the representations of subjective expected utility preferences that admit state-dependent incompleteness, and subjective expected utility preferences displaying non-comparability of acts from distinct sources. The notions familiar events and sources are defined and characterized. The relation greater familiarity on sources and increasing familiarity of a source are also defin...
متن کاملA Minimal Extension of Bayesian Decision Theory
Savage denied that Bayesian decision theory applies in large worlds. This paper proposes a minimal extension of Bayesian decision theory to a large-world context that evaluates an event E by assigning it a number π(E) that reduces to an orthodox probability for a class of measurable events. The Hurwicz criterion evaluates π(E) as a weighted arithmetic mean of its upper and lower probabilities, ...
متن کاملPRELIMINARY DRAFT Not for citation Credibility of Information Sources and the Formation of Individuals' Option Prices for Climate Change Mitigation
Ex ante willingness to pay to prevent adverse environmental change depends on people's perceptions about just how bad the situation will become if mitigation policies are not adopted. These perceptions are influenced by an array of external information sources that might be deemed more or less credible by individuals. I describe an empirical game plan wherein people's native prior distributions...
متن کاملInformation processing under imprecise risk with an insurance demand illustration
This paper deals with the impact of information on the decisions of an agent whose beliefs are imprecise and whose preferences are not in accordance with the Subjective Expected Utility (SEU) model. We assume that his one-shot preferences are representable by a Hurwicz criterion with pessimism–optimism index a. We moreover assume that in a sequential decision making situation the decision maker...
متن کاملGeneralized neo-additive capacities and updating
This paper shows that, for Choquet expected utility preferences, the axioms consquentialism, state independence and conditional certainty equivalent consistency under updating characterise a family of capacities, which we call Generalized Neo-Additive Capacities (GNAC). This family contains as special cases, among others, neo-additive capacities as introduced by Chateauneuf, Eichberger, and Gra...
